Hi my name is Janet

I am just starting out in the pen turning,and I just love it,turned my first pen last weekend and it looks great to me anyways,I am going to try and turn an acrylic one tomorrow and I am a little nervouse about that is there any difference from the wood to acrylic

I think the bigest difference between wood and acrylic is acrylic has a tendancy to chip out more than most woods.
I turn my acrylics with an oval skew.

Keep your tools sharp and be gentle. some acrylics are easy some like inlace do chip fairly easy. Paint the inside of the blank so the color of the tube doesn't show through. I use gorilla glue to glue the tubes in because sometimes CA glue doesn't seem to dry well and the blank will slip when you go to turn it. Good luck.

Welcome Janet. I was kind of hesitant about working with acrylics. I use a rounded skew as well. Keep tools sharp and go slow.

I second the recommendation to use gorrilla glue (or Sumo) or epoxy to glue your tubes in. Save the CA for a finish on your wooden pens! Or ... as you say your going to do ... turn acrylic and save yourself the frustration that sometimes comes with trying to do a ca finish on wood :biggrin:
The acrylics polish up very nicely with some Micro mesh followed by 20/20 plastic polish or other like compounds and you don't end up with paper towel stuck to your blank :mad:
Can anyone guess what I was just doing before this post ? :wink:
