It helps to wet the full grain before taking a picture. That will reveal more of the color and grain and make identification somewhat easier. It looks like a fully dried burl, and that is good for making a pen. Green/wet - not yet dried burls/wood makes identification easier in it natural state, but if dried, then wetting the surface helps a bunch!

Cool! I'll give it a little spray and post a few more tonight, thank you for the suggestion!

Who knows ! . . . . . and . . ultimately . . does anybody really care what wood it is ?

Whatever it is, . . . it will make a very nice-looking pen !!!

I know that we all would like to know what wood we are working with, but, in "the end", does it really matter ?

Of course, a potential customer may ask . . . "What wood is this ?" . . . and you would like to be able to answer definitively . . Such is life !!!

You could make up a reasonable answer and everyone would be just as happy as if you really knew !!! . . 😀 😀 😀 :)

Here is the wood that I sprayed a bit of water on to show the grain more.
