I can't seem to find the posts on here where people are turning pens without the mandrel. I'm not tlking about closed end madrels. I just want to eliminate the mandrel which tends to bend evntually, causing slight inaccuracies.

Martin, In 2009 I did a tutorial about turning between centers and it is in the library... http://content.penturners.org/library/techniques/turningbetweencenters.pdf

At the beginning is a link to a thread where there was a lot of discussion about turning between centers. I believe that anyone who reads through the tutorial and looks at the reference photos will have a pretty clear understanding of how they can turn without using mandrels. It might be a good place to at least visit.
