OK, I'm stumped. I went to remove the live center from my Jet mini for the first time and things didn't work out as planned. I believe its an MT2 live center but when I used a jamb stick to remove it, just the outer hub and bearing slid off. If its an MT2, its hollow and it stayed in the end of the lathe. I tried to see if I could use a larger diameter jamb stick but it looks like the ID through the tailstock is the same size throughout.

Is the live center really an MT2 device and if so, does anyone know how to remove it???

Your Jet mini is a MT2 in the tailstock.
When you say the outer hub and bearing slid off,
that sounds like a cause for concern.
Try unlocking the quill and retract the
tailstock wheel forcibly as it stops.
the whole live center unit should self eject.
If that fails to work,
you also should have gotten a knockout bar with your
lathe, just put the large end in the hole in the
back of the tailstock and tap the center to push it out.
Hope this helps!

John, Johnny has good advice. The Jet Mini has a self extracting feature on the tailstock. Just rotate the handle counter-clockwise all the way and the MT shaft will pop out. Then tap the bearing section back onto the MT shaft and your live center is restored.

The knock out rod is for the headstock... Or when you want the removable center point out for hollowing through tailstock...

John,

You got it and boy am I embarassed. I've seen the live center come out of the tailstock multiple times but didn't think of it at all until your post. It did come apart as I mentioned in my first post but it looks like it will easily press back together.

Thanks again!

John

That's true; but....... Self-extraction is a function of two things. One is the design of the tailstock and the other is the length of the Morse taper on your tool. I have a Jacobs chuck and an aftermarket 60° live center and neither will self-extract from the JET mini tail stock because each has a MT that is about a half inch shorter than the stock JET live center.
