My jet 1014, older model before they were white, has devolped a little stiffness in the tailstock. well ok ALOT of stiffness. I have to use a lot of force to turn the handle to advance or retract the quill.

I have taken out the quill part and made sure there wasnt anything in the way. Even with it out, it is hard to turn the handle. Is there anyway to take it apart and relube the gears inside it?

Thanks

Dennis, It was not on a Jet lathe but I did have a similar problem with my metal lathe. I was able to remove the hand wheel at the back of the tail stock and remove the screw that moves the tail stock quill. the very back end of this screw was all chewed up. It required replacing the entire screw to fix it but for my lathe it was not a huge expense. the quill now moves freely like it was when it was new. It is my opinion that this break down was due to a lot of drilling with this lathe and is jsut one of the expenses of getting the work done.

Dennis; By "quill part" I believe you mean the live center with the point on it?

Do you have a manual? Send me your email address and I will send you a PDF file of the lathe manual.

Since I have noticed my tail stock is getting more difficult to turn, I decided to see how it is put together. I have a recent (white) 1014VS.

The tail stock (TS) is very simple. There are no gears inside. There is only a threaded rod attached to the TS handle. The threaded rod goes into a barrel with the taper in it. The barrel is threaded. The set screw on the handle adjusts the tightness of the tailstock. The locking screw in the back of the tail stock rides in a slot to keep the barrel from rotating and turning the threaded rod makes the barrel extend from the tail stock.

Remove the locking handle from the back side of the TS. Hold the barrel and turn the handle to extend the barrel until it comes free. Loosen the set screw on the handle about 5 turns. Pull the handle off the shaft. There is a dimple on the shaft for the set screw. Use a wooden dowel or any rod to tap (or push) the end of the shaft toward the head stock. The shaft on mine is hollow.

Lube and reassemble.

Hope this helps....
