I am getting my tax return in a few weeks and want to get a chuck. I am looking mostly at the Barracuda. Mostly cuz it has 4 jaws that come with it. I also looked at the grizzly but it only comes with 1 set of jaws. I hear you can use the Nova Jaws and it might be made by the same company. I really like the Nova G3 but it only comes with 2 sets of jaws and is the same price on Amazon. I do love that all the jaws can be used with the nova.

What do you guys think is the best way to go?

What uses will you have for your chuck? I only use my Nova Precision Midi Chuck to hold my pen blanks to drill on my lathe, it works very well. Did you have other uses in mind?

Chris

Check out the PSI 'C' series of chucks. They are designed to have quite a few interchangable jaws. I have the GMC-3 mini and it came with three sets of jaws and, I believe, the larger ones do also. Their prices are highly competitive and the chucks are quite good. They are Chinese knock-offs of the high priced European ones but much less money.

Where did you get it at?

I bought the Nova Midi chuck for my Jet Mini - very nice chuck, and I got a great deal on it on Ebay. However, it only comes with #2 jaws. So, I decided I needed the 1" pin jaws for various reasons. Another $40 just for those jaws - OUCH! I've read good reviews of the Barracuda, it's supposed to be PSI's nicest chuck. I wouldn't be afraid to buy it - the fact that it comes with all those jaw is really nice. If I could do it over again, I'd probably buy the Barracuda. The PSI utility chucks are also good I guess, but the Barracuda is a better product.

If this is the one you're talking about: http://www.grizzly.com/products/h6265
it's a copy of the Vicmark chuck and can use the same jaws. The Nova jaws won't fit. The Nova's screw holes are larger and the tennon is a bit thinner.
A couple of our club members have the Griz and are happy with it. It's well made.

Jeremy,
Look on the Penn State website.. they were having a sale on the chuck Frank mentioned.. don't know if it's still on though... I have two of them so I don't have to keep changing the jaws when I do my peppermills. I like them.

Nice thing about both, they came with an adapter so I can use them on either of my lathes.. one is a 3/4"-16 tpi and the other is 1"-8 tpi..

I got the PSI Barracuda 2 from Amazon for a very good price with free shipping. The chuck works great and comes with 4 sets of jaws. A good economical choice for a mini lathe.

If cost is no object, and I know it always is, hold out for the 3 1/2" Vickmark,
that's what I did and I have no regrets. Now I just have to save up for some of the
speciality face plates!

PSI products are purchased from PSI a/k/a Penn State Industries.
