Totally non pen related. I'm not much of a flat piece wood worker but I have a projest that I would like to either do or have someone else do for me. On my '65 Chevelle I have a console that I want to replace with an exotic wood console. I'm thnking of making it out of 3/8 inch plwood and then using an exotic veneer over that. It will have the radio, one A/C vent and a GPS installed. My question is it's 36 inches long and 6 inches tall along the floor and 11 inches from floor to bottom of dash where the radio is and the GPS and Vent will be and 7 inches wide (See photo of excisting console) where is a good place to buy the veneer and do I need to buy it at least 12 inches wide for the sides or can it be pieced. Also I have heard that veneer needs to be vaccumed in a bag to get it to lay flat on the plywood. Can it be glued and a board clamped over it to adhear? Also do any of the burl veneers come peel and stick? I would really like a Amboyna burl veneer. Here is photos of the console in the car now.

Skip, I have their catalog and just about every supplier of Chevelle parts there are. Your suggestion of an stainless engine turned insert is great, and gives me another idea. I have the original chrome console that the '65 SS with auto came with along with the shifter and it needs chemical striping and rechromed, they want $800.00 to do it and still say that some of the pitting will be seen, plus the shifter is for a 2 speed powerglide and I have a 350t so we would have to manufacture some linkage.

Maybe check out this site

How about engine turning a stainless steel insert?

Love the mats by the way!!!

Mark seems that they haven't finished the site yet as you can't click on the veneers in stock, I'll call them on Monday and ask for Richard.
Roy,

Take a look at this website (Carlton McLendon, Inc. Rare Woods And Veneers). This place is in midtown Atlanta. If you find something you like I would be happy to go talk to Richard and get it for you. I have never gone in there looking for something and not found it. Let me know.

Mark

I'd apply the veneer then use an epoxy and glass fiber layer to completely seal it an protect it. Just like you would do on a strip built canoe.

You may even be able to apply the veneer to a plastic console this way. Less work in it that way. One thing for sure is a vaccum bag set up.

Roy, send the car up to me and it will be done by the time you get it back.

Don't listen to his silly suggestion Roy !! I will save you the cost of sending it and collect it from your place for no charge !!

You're welcome !!!

Gosh, you guys are soooooo helpful:biggrin: Damn nice of both of you:rolleyes:

I joined a Chevelle forum and one of the members did this, I'm rethinking and might copy this with a GPS installed in the riser and having a local upholstery shop do the stitching in black :

Many of the custom audio guys use a process of building a frame then covering it in fleece then fiberglass resin. Check out youtube and search for fleece fiberglass and you should get some ideas as far as your console goes.
