I have decided to try turning something different and not sure how to go about it.
i thought that i would start by turning some bowls.
my question is.... what are my options for mounting the bowl blank to the lathe?
does anyone know of online resources that i can read up on bowl turning?

thank you for your help.

There are tons of info online...just do a search.

Try these:

The most basic way is by using a faceplate. It is however only recommended for face turning (grain running prependicular to the lathe bed) and NOT for endgrain (grain running parallel the lathe bed).

If you can afford it, buy a chuck (Oneway, Nova, etc)...it will make your life much easier (but it is not a must). Check WoodChips for great prices on Nova chucks. http://www.woodchipshome.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=WC&Category_Code=CHU

He also sells Crown tools which for me is one of the best.

The most common way is to mount the blank on a screw center to turn the outside and a tendon or a recess for a chuck. Then reversing the bowl and holding it with a chuck to turn the outside.

You can turn a bowl just using a face plate and I have in the past, that being said I love my chuck and will not do it again. Personally I hold the blank on a small faceplate for the initial turning than flip in to the chuck for the inside.

This is a pretty good article on how to turn a bowl.
