Walrus tusk?
Probably. Could it be 18th century scrimshaw ?
I would guess whale tooth. I had a reproduction whale tooth that looked just like that with scrimshaw on it. You'll prob have to drill a small hole up under the bottom in the cavity to see if it's real or not. I've been told there were lots of reproductions made.
I'm with Kryn here...looks handcrafted to me. I am by no means an expert and would love to hear what you find out about it.Hi John, as in the other "Help to identify" I would say that it is genuine whale tooth, as looking from the end, where it was cut you can see different shades of colouring, if it was resin, it would be all the same. The whalers of old, had plenty of time on their hands, being at sea for about 2 years at a time, plus plenty of patience, so it would be hand done not laser.
If you have a maritime museum near you, they should be able to identify it for you.
