Hello All,

My name is Joe or Joebill depending on what y'all want to call me. I now live in Oregon on the west coast of the USA. I am new to wood-turning. I do not know much about anything to do with turning (tools, sharpening, staining or finishing and a bunch of stuff I don't know that I don't know yet LOL).

I used to do a lot of wood working as a kid. Helped my dad and granddad build cabinets for our house, making wooden cutting boards, bird houses, jewelery boxes and such. Even made some tables and chairs.

Woodworking has always been peaceful for me, a way to recharge or get rid of the junk floating in my head. Now that I am partially paralyzed (1 nerve in each arm and 1 nerve in each leg) from the military, I can't do most of that anymore. A friend showed me videos of turning and well here I am. It is hard to do but it sure makes me smile and my wife is willing to help me anyway she can. She is even learning how to turn so she can show me how to do stuff or help me do it better. I am very lucky to have her.

I hope to learn how to turn better and to relearn about stains and finishes. I also want to learn how to use more traditional turning tools. I use easy wood tools now with the inserts. I don't have anything to sharpen gouges or scrapers with or even how to hold one yet. It will take me a while to learn all of that stuff anyways. I can only turn for so long at a time so my projects seem to take weeks for what my wife does in a day.

Nice to meet you all,

Joe W.

Joe,
Hello and welcome. You don't mention where in Oregon you are located. You will find considerable advice and wide ranging opinions all with their own unique level of value. A value which you must learn to discern for yourself.

While I actually live in Washington, I am associated with several Oregon woodworking groups. Judging by your message your interests extend beyond pen turning. I would be happy to share information on some of the Oregon groups as well as discuss the wonderful hobby of pen turning. Send me a private message and we can figure out a time to share should you be interested.

Butch
