Hi, I am a turner from North West Norfolk in the UK. I have been turning for a few years since I inherited my fathers lathe during lockdown. I have turned pens in plain woods, in metals and segmented. I like to prepare my own blanks from wood collected locally.

Welcome feom Greece

Welcome from North Carolina, USA! Exotic woods are great, but local woods are underrated. They can be quite beautiful, and more meaningful for people as gifts. The price is usually nice, too (usually free!) You mentioned turning metal. Is your inherited lathe a metal lathe?

Hi Todd,
Dads lathe is an Axminster wood lathe but when I retired I was given a mini Metal lathe as a retirement present. It does mean that as well as turning myself a set comprising a copper pencil, brass ball point and aluminum fountain pen, I am now able to make my own bosses for the mandrel. I did find after lockdown that I had a number of differing pen kits but was unable to source boss kits to fit so learnt to make my own. Cheaper than buying them!
I have also experimented casting pewter and making combined wood/pewter turnings. I have found either lathe workes for this.
