I have for several years wanted to learn how to make pens. I bought a lathe from Pen State about 9 months ago and have really enjoyed turning out pens. It is a real fun hobby...Have made a few dozen for church members. I have made primarily the slimline, comfort (without grip), designer, 4 in 1 screwdriver, and ice cream scoops.
I have enjoyed the information found in IAP.. I also do a lot of scrollsaw projects such as fret and word art.

Welcome from Austin Texas! I made it to Austin by way of Melbourne Florida. We miss the sunshine state from time to time. Hang around here and your pen turning skills will improve and your bank account will shrink!

Welcome Ray!
Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome Ray. Post some picts of your work! I know, I know, people at church take them before you can take a picture of them! This is a great hobby, a great way to make extra cash and for a few - a good living.

I sure wish I was in FL at the moment, it is cold over here!
