Hi all. I have made a couple of posts here but have not officially introduced myself. I am Jim. I'm in the Air Force and currently in Hawaii. I bought my lathe about a year ago to make a chess set. I quickly learned that the chess pieces were going to be too much for a newbie. I started making pens about 4 months ago. I bought a couple books, videos and then read some stuff online. Most of my pens have flaws and would prevent me from selling them. I have made a few that are good enough to sell. I sold my first two last week. Very proud of them. I've gotten some great information from this forum. Glad to be a part of it.

Jim

Welcome Jim! Glad to have you here and Thank you for your service!

I am including a link to a PDF file that goes over many aspects of pen turning from finish - to pens - to tools - to methods etc. It is not in detail but a good overview for pen turning. This is not nearly as good as having Russ to call on, but I am including it anyway.

Also included below is a link to a new post that gives some information that people wished they had known earlier in pen turning. Some good information by those that make pens.

Does anyone know of a forum like this for general woodworking? I have a project that I am working on and I am stuck on one aspect of it.

Below are two WW forums that I am familiar with. There are some larger and more specific forums out there and some larger than the two below, but these two are friendly:

http://familywoodworking.org/forums/index.php

I have been a member of the forum below since the beginning and it started as a specialty forum for a specific lightweight but accurate saw. That saw has been discontinued but the forum has grown beyond being saw-specific. Still it is family like there.

Both require you to sign up. There are quite a few woodworkers (flat work) here. You could try posting the question under the Casual Conversation forum - or under "Other things we make" Forum as a question.
