Happy New Year to all,
I'm new to the pen turning art. I've been a woodworker for about 17 years now and looking for a new hobby to add to my sawdust pile. I see that you folks make smaller sawdust that I am normally use to sweeping up :) . I love the beauty of the art of pen turning, I believe it's more of an art than a form of woodworking. One's skill levels can rapidly rise with the practice and patience that one is willing to invest.
I admire all woodworkers these days as it seems to be an dying art. With the young folks so involved with the computer age, woodworking seems to be last on their list of exciting things to learn.
To me, there is no other of a great feeling than giving someone a work of art that you yourself have created. You have takin the time, patience, and persistence to master those skills. Anyone can press computer keys to gain instant knowledge, but then what? Working with your hands and mind combined with your self persistant skills can not create a bigger high.
Well, again Happy New year to all and keep em' turning... Roy King

Welcome Roy! Glad to have you on this "slippery slope."

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
