Here is how I converted my HF mini lathe with a hand wheel for under $1.00 if not free. The 4" buffer system I make myself:biggrin:.
1st take the cone shaped cover off the head stock (3 screws) then you will see two nuts, take the first nut off.
2nd drill the center hole in the black cone shaped cover the same size as the inner diameter of the shaft nut.
3rd find a old piece of hardwood laying around the shop (I used black walnut) and turn it 1 1/4" larger then the black cone shaped cover and at least 1" thick. Turn to you likings.
4th drill 1 1/4" in center of piece you turned for knock out. But large enough to insert socket to re-install nut.
5th Screw cone shaped cover upside down on center of back side of the piece you turned. I used wood screws and a little epoxy.
3rd Slide the new hand wheel on the shaft and put nut into a socket and slide threw hole (you might need a extension) tighten nut by holding drive shaft with rag and vice grips be careful not to mess the up the threads:frown:.
I use a HF $7.00 magnetic light it works great.
Now your HF lathe has a hand wheel and a adjustable light for next to nothing:smile:.
I did kind of the same thing on the tail stock but it is a little harder.
The buffer system I build, if interested PM me.

Great post John. When I converted mine it cost $3. I like the looks of your much better than mine. I just might reconvert mine. Thanks for the information. That's a fine looking buffing system.

Do you rack your knuckles when adjusting the speed?

I do wish I had thought of this mod when I had mine. I can't figure out how to do a handwheel on my 46-700.
