I have been reading advice to keep black cats indoors on Halloween - have I missed something? I've never heard of anyone going after black cats around Halloween. We were adopted awhile back by a spayed black female feline now known around the house as Miss Kitty or Miss Pretty Kitty or "the Damn Cat" depending on the circumstances. She is basically an Outdoor cat (who is working on the process of becoming an indoor cat) who wants to spend most of the time outside but we don't want anyone to hurt her as a Halloween thing....

I don't know how much is rumor or fact, but I've heard similar stories for years as well, about protecting black cats during halloween from rituals and other malicious pranksters. Hopefully none of which live near you...

If your cat is a semi-Feral cat that has adopted you..

it will probably be ok. They normally mistrust most strangers. I guess you only have to worry about her friends. Friends will always get them before their enemies.

We only know that she was not caught spayed and released because they ear notch them and she isn't ear notched which means she either left "home" or more likely was dropped off by someone. She does trust people enough to get close enough to be caught and she does not fight if picked up.

We lucked out like that last year and got two kittens from a stray mamma that was very friendly like that. I never even thought about Halloween when we got them, but one is black and white tuxedo though they are both indoor cats.

Do they still notch ears for TNR? Our local shelter recently got in heaps of trouble for releasing cats and creating an illegal feral colony in the woods behind the shelter to prevent having to put them down. It's so sad for the animals either way...

Paint a white stripe down her back , bush up her tail , and she should be fine .
While walking the dogs my wife saw one of those just today -- fortunately PePe Le Pew was a very young guy and not yet able to cause abandoment of an entire neighborhood so she and the dogs were able to return home.

I would keep her in given the choice. The local cat shelter also won't adopt out black cats around Halloween. I think they have had people ask for black cats around Halloween.

In California the SPCA will not let you adopt a black cat in October. Some pagan and wicken groups like to use them for sacrifice...not kidding...it happens. My little monster, Momo is entirely black, but is also an inside queen so we keep her away from the door on the 31st.

Having 3 rescues, and one that adopted me at work. And working with a local rescue for cats most will not adopt out about a month before. It is mostly due to the abuse the neighborhood teen and tween nit wits put any cat thru any time of year but think that a black cat will enhance their standing among their peers.
I am not a fan of letting the cats out at all, more from the dangers of them catching something. Ring worm the fungus is hard to get rid of, the medicine and vet visits are expensive. Not to mention you can get it, the dog etc. Plus the spores being shed means the house and bedding has to fungicided.

Not to mention all of the other things that they can get and some are transmittable to humans. Last year something went thru the neighborhood and killed all the outdoor cats. Never did find out if it was poison or a disease. Yes there is a problem more so with the teenies just abusing animals they catch, Than the hard core junior serial killers in training types. Since they all seem to start out torturing small animals. The sad thing is it seems to go up after the idiot talking heads report on it on the tube.
Keep them indoors!

Over the years we had 10 cats, 5 the most at one time, At the present we have 2 a Tabby, Lacey and a Black cat, Spookey...Our cats are all indoor cats...it's a dangerous world out there...also we are dead set against declawing...if one was to get out they would be defenseless Kids can do some crazy stuff...I would not trust the great outdoors.

First is Lacey 13 yr old Tabby girl...then Spookey my best Bud Black cat...

Can't possibly count the number of cats I've had over the last 70 years. Usually two or three at a time. Only very rarely have we been without a cat, and then for only a short time. Always have a dog or two as well. Right now we have two house cats, one outside feral, and one dog. I keep ALL my animals in on halloween. But partucularly the cats. The feral is the only one out, and he rarely leaves my backyard. He is a tuxedo cat, so not so likely to be bothered.

Just to be safe I would keep her inside. We had a one eyed black cat named Silk. For 18 years every Halloween we kept her inside. That way we knew the following morning all family members would be accounted for. Keeps the kids (mostly the wife) happy.
