Sold the '51 pickup today and as it drove off I had a tear drop but then a big smile as I thought now I have enough money to really make the '65 Chevelle a show winner .

Goodbye '51 pickup

Pity you couldn't keep both :(
Oh well, the Chevelle's probably the most practical for you both anyway.
How is Dee btw?

Guess I'll have to settle for a ride in the car instead of the truck. Oh darn!

Paul, hope to pick you up next week for lunch, as Dee will be able drive so I can leave her for a few hours.

You don't pick cheap hobbies do you Roy?

Damn Smitty that's almost to the word what Dee said:biggrin:

Skippy, I wish I could have kept both but what with Dees recent hip replacement she just couldnt get comfy in the "51 but loves the Chevelle. She is doing great and will start chasing me around the house soon.

Thinking of cloning it into an SS, it's in the shop now getting the front suspension totally rebuilt, chroming both bumpers and the console and ordered all new window felts.

Sorry to hear this Roy. But, sacrifices have to be made sometimes. Whatchya got planned for the Chevy?

Well Roy, I spoke with a small amount of authority on that having restored a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible in 1985 and kept it for about 14 years - sold it before moving to DE because had no place to garage it here.. Nice car but not cheap and just a bear to find some parts for, an electrical part for the AC went and never did find one so it had a cobbled in patch for 5 years. I got a few show trophies but never better than 2nd Place, best I ever did was 3rd in a really good sized show.

Had a 50 Ford Pickup with Flathead V8 for 11 years. Driven daily. Rebuilt engine 2 times. Sold it to a neighbor 4 years ago. See it every day under his carport, never driven. Sad sad.

Smitty, I've either built or bought over a dozen classic or street rods so am well versed on the cost of building them and cost of parts. Try finding an SS console with shifter for a 65 Chevelle, nobody has made them for the aftermarket so you need to find an original, the are made of chromed pot metal which after 48 years pit and need re chroming if you can find one. I did and it cost me $370 with shipping and will cost me another $350-$400 to get re finished and chromed, or try to find a 32 Ford grill for under $300, yes it's a much more expensive hobby compared to pen making but hell we only can live so long and as long as my kids are doing well and we're not in debt I'll spend their inheritance on my toys:biggrin:, as the old saying goes "He with the most toys when he dies wins" .

Well I only did one - but I'll tell you, that missing part for the AC cost me more than one trophy - I changed from a 'show' car to a 'parade' car because of it. I didn't mean to imply that you didn't know how much it would cost, I was only saying that when I made the original statement that I knew from experience that it wasn't a cheap hobby.

I made only one car show last year and it was a street rod show - some really beautiful cars that I would have given my eye teeth to own. I am particularily fond of the '32 Chevy convertible and some of the '30s coupes. I also like a lot of the late '50s and a couple of the early '60s cars. Not particularily fond of much in the '40s or later than maybe '67/'68 except for pickup trucks (I like all of them - old, new and in between).

I told my kids "I can't take it with me so my goal is to spend my last penny the day before I die and stick you with the funeral costs. And you can't cremate my remains to save money."

At least I got to see it "in the flesh" before it went. Beautiful truck. I can hardly wait to see what you do with the car. It is already awesome.
