Any advice to old wood worker with limited shop about building a guitar.

Anybody used a guitar kit for such. Just got a note from rockler about guitar kits.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If doing an acoustic you need jigs,,jigs and more jigs. Electrics require templates but other than that they are pretty straight forward....depending on which type of body you are wanting to build. For a first build I would do a tele body and buy a neck from Warmoth or USACG. The kit necks and bodies are cheap but quality is an isssue. For further building info go to TDPRI.com and check out the Tele Home Depot and Finely Finished areas in the forums.

When my brother built his first guitar (electric), he purchased a kit. What he found is that while the components will make an impressive beginner guitar, the electronics and other items are not the high quality that he hoped to achieve. As a result, he had to purchase a number of substitute parts in order to get there, and therefore ended up with a lot of parts that he will never use. He told me he would never buy another kit again. He does shop for unfinished guitar bodies on Ebay, then buys the other components that he needs separately.

From his experience, I would summarize by saying that you need to determine what level of quality you want to achieve. A trip to Guitar World will show you the amazing difference in quality and the cost factor. If you're looking for a beginning guitar, a kit would serve you well.

I'm not sure how it works here...some cheesy forums ban you if a thread is posted from another forum...try this. Acoustic Guitar Build.
Alex is a friend and a great woodworker!!! Start to finish instruct. There is an electric tutorial there somewhere...let me look for a bit...
And here you go http://familywoodworking.org/forums/showthread.php?19924-GUITAR-BUILD-2-IN-PROGRESS ...not sure where the link leads you, but start from one and go to INFINTY!! You may have to become a member of FWW, but they are cool folks that frequent this site.

Chris is definetly the guy to talk to about this. I remember when Chuck (Dalecamino) built his, Chris had all the answers known to man!!

Well, I don't know about that Ernie. There's one answer that eludes me....what do I do with all these guitars I've built??..:wink:

Don, as a woodworker I don't think a kit will satisfy you. At least build the body. Basswood, Alder and Ash (typical tone woods) are pretty cheap for the amount you need to build a body. A neck is a bit more of an undertaking to build and that is why I suggested to go to Warmoth or Custom Guitars. Kit necks are crap and there really is no way to make them better. If you screw up a body...toss it and start again but, buy a good neck.

Chris...Do you know Alex Reid or Stu Ablett? Both are good friends, in Japan and really tear it up with wood working. Good to know you have a few contacts over there!!

Jim,

No, I'm not familar. I do pens, urushi, and guitars. There are loads of accomplished woodworkers in my area. Some are absolutely amazing.
