There were lots of interesting answers. Made me want to try some of them. One mentioned it looked bookmatched end to end. It was not bookmatched, just two tiny limbs close together. The wood is
red sumac. Most of these trees(shrub) are not big enough but I have one that has 6 trunks and is about 12 feet tall. It is very stringy and fibrous and I had trouble getting the drill holes clean enough to get a tube into. But the grain and color turned out nice. I plan on trying some more.

Red Sumac, huh?

I have some that have trunks around 4" - 6" - grows like a weed here in VT and I wouldn't have thought it was good for anything. My eyes are now open and I am going to cut some up and give it a try.
