I think I have a 60 grit right now(the paper label is gone) and it seems to take off a lot off metal. I didn't test on my good tools. I did it on my H.F. tools.;)

Thanks,
Steve

A professional master turner led me to the 80 grit for sharpening. The 100 doesn't cut fast enough and the 60 is more for grinding. That's his opinion and my experience seems to bear it out. I like the 80 as it does the job well and doesn't (over)heat the tools.

I don't use my grinder for sharpening yet... mine is a $20 flea market grinder that I picked up in Tucson... I think it has a 35 on left and 60 on right... I know the wheel on the left will cut really fast and is very porous... need to get rid of it and put a finer wheel there. I usually touch up the tool with an 80 or 100 grit 1" belt sander.. seems to work pretty good.
