I am 18 and am from Marshalltown, IA. I learned how to turn pens last year but have only started seriously making and selling them for the last month and a half. I had to the privilege of going to Mexico for 2 months this last winter to work with the churches there. I am about to break even financially and hope to be able to send some money back to mexico.

I have made around 60 or so pens, but I am a little bored. I've been perusing this site for a while now and really like what I've seen.

Welcome Jack, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Hi

Welcome Jack. Looks like we have a lot of turners, esp. pen turners here in Iowa. I second the Library recommendation, I have been reading all of the articles there for the last month or so. Fascinating.

Hi Jack, Welcome
I also am from Iowa....sounds like you have a great beginning! Let's see some photos!

I think we should get an Iowa Pen turners going...maybe we could get some suggestions from some of the other groups on how to be successful. Some of the groups sound like they really have a great thing going.

Welcome Jack. Glad you found this site. I'm about hour or so from you. I lived in Marshalltown for awhile and then moved to Albinon. And I live Cedar Falls,Ia now.

Welcome, from Wisconsin. I am originally form Iowa, and my Mom still lives in Pella. I have nephew who lives in Marshall County, near State Center.

Post some pics of your pens so we can see what you do.

Welcome, Jack.

Keep looking around, I'm sure you'll see some interesting ideas to cure the boredom. Then show us some pictures of what you come up with.

This site is really nice. It's inspiring to see all the successful turners' galleries and the unique things you have all made. I tried and successfully made the copper wire pen and a couple of segmented pens.

Wow there is a lot of people from Iowa here. It would be cool to get together and see what some accomplished turners have made up close.

Welcome to IAP from Manhattan, KS.

I grew up in Willamsburg, Iowa though. Went through Marshalltown many times on my way to and from ISU.
