Hi and thank you for allowing me to join. I've been turning pens for almost 18 months so fairly new to it all. I started off on a little Chinese micro lathe and really caught the bug. It wasn't long before I moved on to a Proxxon hobby lathe and made my own compression mandrel. I've recently moved on to my new midi lathe. I started to make my own segmented blanks and have included a few pictures, hope you don't mind. I've just finished making some herringbone blanks, fairly basic but I do like a challenge so I'm looking for instructions or advice on how I can make 360 herringbone blanks if you can help?

Thanks Eric Irvine

Welcome to the forum, Eric.
I like your 'Dark side' pen.

Alan
Thanks Alan, it's a label cast I made to go with the "wall" segmented blank. It was a present for a friend who is a massive Pink Floyd fan. I also made this as an alternative

Hi Eric,

Welcome from California. Very nice work on those pens. It looks like you are off to a really great start.

Welcome aboard from Ontario, Canada, Eric
That some amazing work as an introduction. I'm very interested in the crenelated pattern, in the 2nd picture.
360 Herringbones aren't to hard, once you wrap your head around the glue up pattern. The key is keeping the pieces square. This is a library article I wrote.

Thanks Darren, I downloaded your article and have started work already. 4 layers already assembled. It's a great article.

For the crenelated pattern I created a brick wall pattern and then trimmed the blank as close as possible to the veneer. Kind of like these blanks in the image

Thanks Eric, I hope it helps. I haven't done one for a while but keep the pieces thin and equal thickness.

Very cool idea for the crenellations. Your segmenting skills are excellent.

Welcome from Colorado! Your pens are excellent. Love that Dark Side of the Moon pen. My father would love a pen like that!

That is gorgeous Eric. I love the colour rows.
Next you should try thinking the pieces to about half what you have there. These ones are about 2.5mm. I cut them from square block, so that I have face grain on all the visible edges. It gets tricky cutting them, because the tend to break really easy. Usually one in five, unless there is a flaw (crack) in the blank, then they tend to all break. I still haven't perfected a jig for my tablesaw yet.

Keep up the awesome work.
