About 4:30 pm PDT. I got a phone call, caller ID said private number. I answered it thinking it was my MIL. This guy who sounded East Indian came on and asked form and I said it was I. He then proceeded to start talking real fast about my computer and something was going show up on it. He kept talking and Microsoft's name would be dropped, I could never understand what he was saying or talking about, I had already figured this was some kind of spam call, I told him my computer hadn't been all day and he said turn it on. So I told him he was full of dog poo and hung up. 2 minuets later he was back started the same fast excited spiel. I let him go on for a while he told to turn on my computer as they needed it. So I told him it was (not) and he started asking if I saw it and said no and what was I looking for he started rambling again and I told him to F off and hung up. Couple of minuets later he was back and this time I answered Sacrament County High Tech Task Force, Sgt Roye speaking CLICK and no more phone calls. I have no clue what he was trying to do other than trying to get passwords or other personal info. He did say he was from some company in NY and gave me a bunch of number and a name that I could Google, I could never get him to slow down so I could understand him. If calls again I will record it and turn it over the real Sacramento High Tech Task Force. Did manage to sell $200 in pens to neighbor today for gifts to her High Reunion Committee.

That sort of call happens here as well. They are either trying to get you to install some spyware that will record username and passwords, or scam you by getting you to pay for anti-virus software. They want you to pay with your credit card over the phone, they even offer a lifetime service for around $300 !! But once they get your credit card details who knows what they'll do.

It's happened to me, friends, and clients of mine. When they rang me they hung up as soon as I said "this is a scam ". Being in IT I hear about these things but they are becoming more common.
 
I know Microsoft, ebay, PayPal or any other online company is going to call me unsolicited. They just don't do it. This was talking so fast and excitedly I figured he had script or was on something. Hope he call again I wil have a little more fun. Have some numbers to give him along with some nice if to get his little rear traced.
 
I've gotten a number of those calls. Sometimes they claim to the the "IT Department of Windows", sometimes that actually identify the name of a company that I've never heard of. The calls are routed through a telephone number in the Los Angeles area, but the voice has a distinct South Asian accent, and the sound quality leads me to think that they originate oveseas.

It's some kind of computer service scam. I've reported them to the FCC and FTC for violation of the Do Not Call law, but I recognize that I could accomplish more by going into the back yard and talking to the trees.
 
i get this call at least once a month... as a day job i am actually a windows sys admin... if i have time i play along to keep these guys off the phone from people who they could truly end up scamming... the little things entertain me ;)

since ive had these calls dozens of times now its changed a bit... when i first started getting them they would take the risky claim and say they were calling from microsoft, and when i asked our MS technical account manager about it he asked that any calls they claim are coming from ms should be reported to ms etc etc, anyway its evolved now to like above they claim to be from *unintelligeable garbage* windows support desk or something of the like and they want you to open up your windows event log. when you look in there they will ask you if you see anything RED and give you the whole OMG!!! YOU HAVE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM!!! however even on a fresh install of windows you will get events in your logs marked critical. then they try and sell you some junk software and if they succeed you might as well change your phone number and use your computer as your new boat anchor...

ive tried several tactics to get them to stop calling including i dont have any windows computers (which is true! as a windows sys admin, after fixing windows servers all day long the last thing i want to do when i come home is fix my own, im a devout mac user ;) ) and conferencing in my technical acct mgr from microsoft, but its to no avail. i suspect the only dispositions they use on their calls are "no answer", and "we got a live one!!!" given that the calls almost certainly originate overseas any north american DNCL laws are scoffed at as they know they powers that be have no legal recourse over them, so the calls will only stop when the scam no longer makes enough money, then a new one will start... Louie was right, talking to the trees would be more productive :cool:

I too got a call from the same folks.......ekpt insisting his name was "Kevin" when I know it wasn't. Dude made me very uncomfortable! And they do call us back from time to time.
 
One other thing the during the call I could hear my self, like an echo. Hope they call again I am going to have some fun. I am retired and have time to play the games, the computer will not be on and I will give number to police dept and made up passwords etc. I will try and get them to slow down by claim I am hard of hearing, I will have it on the speaker phone also. I will aske them snail mail me at the address of police dept. Any thing to F with them.
