I was looking at a tool shoping list for HVAC tools. It said to get Kline #85078 (8 pc set) and Kline SK234 (screw holding screwdrivers). Are the SK234 just used to start the screw? I don't know why I would need both?

Don't know why you would need both as the difference is the starters have two spring steel fingers that hold under the heads of the screws. I always found they are a pia, and ended up cutting the fingers off. I never could get them to work right.
I used the type that had a split blade and slider they would work a little better for me.
I think the point is working in the control boxes with the juice on, no electricity to bite stray fingers. I always turned the electricity off since it was easier to not worry about touching something you aren't suppose to!

Just looked they are a 3 sized split blade sliding tube to tighten. They don't tighten the screws well after starting most switch over to regular solid blades.

The split blades are just for starting screws - used mostly in places where you can't get your fingers in to steady the screw. After using the split blade you use a regular screwdriver to tighten. You can get along without split blades but there are times when they come in mighty handy. Problem is they only work for sloted head screws, and you'll probably see more Phillips heads.

I know you didn't say where you were gong to use the screw holder but HVAC usualy means some type of electrical. Using a metal srewdriver on any electrical panel is chancy at best. Unless you pull the meter off the base, you aways have power in the panel !! Pulling the main does not shut off incoming power, 220 volts. If you were working in an industral envirement, OSHA reguires that ALL your tools are insulated. You can buy these at Home Depot, but they are expensive. The split tipped drivers, as Smitty said, are ment to start screws but not tighten them, and are used in places you can't easly reach or places you don't want your hands to be. You can also buy Graffite screwdrivers to work on HVAC boards. Jim S

The thing is that HVAC covers a lot of territory some electrical, some plumbing and some mechanical and if abody knows enough to be working around the electrical end they better know enough to use the right tools.

I installed a lot of electrical stuff in my day and most of the wiring hookups were made before it was even connected to power - we usually did that last. Repairs and troubleshooting, on the other hand, are a lot trickier and require much more knowledge about working on or around live circuits. When I worked on vacuum tube radar and radar repeaters while in the navy the first thing we did was find out where the power came in to the box and where the disconnect was (at that time it was usually fuses) and they might be 20 feet away in another room.
