Well my wife gave me the green light to get the stuff needed for drilling blanks on the lathe in July. I have had my craftsman 12" drill press for only two months if that. I am seriously thinking about taking it back for a refund even if they charged me a restocking fee. I just can't think of why I would want to keep the drill press after getting the lathe drilling system. I have to check on my receipt but looks like the return period is 90 days. I am eyeballing the chuck at PSI for the up to 1" blanks.

Of course another part of me thinks holding on to the DP might not be a bad idea in case I need it for other things at some point. Either way I am looking at a July time frame before I can get it. I have read lots of posts and looked at the instructions a couple times. Just wanted to let you all know what I was up to.

A drill press does have it's place in the shop . There are times when you will need to drill a hole in something that can't be put on a lathe , even if all you do is pens . I have a DP and do find other uses for it but most of the time it is my dedicated buffing station . I bought buffing wheels and drill arbors and compounds from Home Depot and use my drill press to buff all my pens . It works great for this and takes seconds to switch between different wheels and compounds .
 
Butch you are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks a bunch man! Yeah the idea of unbolting the thing from the work bench and disassembling was seeming a pain. So looks like I keep the DP and then also will have the lathe to use as well.
 
congrats on the dilling on the lathe equipment...you will find it so much nicer not to metion more accurate! I do drill antler with the drill press tho..much easier for me to do it that way..and as Butch said it does come in handy for other uses..
 
A drill press is always handy to have. Even for stuff around the house.I have 2, one in the garage for metal & misc stuff, and 1 in the shop, I still drill blanks with one. Someday I'll step into the 21st century and drill blanks on the lathe
 
I don't own a drill press. I'm not saying that it isn't worth having, it's just that I have never needed one so badly that I wanted to part with the cash to get one. Plus. I am short on space. Maybe someday. Congratulations on the green light for the purchase!!
