Golf Tee Pencils

Has anyone made the golf tee pencils from PSI? I thought these would make good inexpensive presents people could buy at my craft table. From my experience these basically suck. There is a little rubber piece that goes in the nib that is supposed to hold the lead when you release the mechanism. In reality when you push the mechanism in and out the lead just follows. Has anyone gotten these to function properly?

From another "B" I've had the same problem. I bought three and turned and assembled one and it works OK SOMETIME. My one regret is that I used a nice Claro Walnut blank for the one I made. I seldom return anything to PSI but I'm considering it for the other two kits.
