Since I am planning on retiring in October, I started to go through the mass of wood we harvested from the grounds people at the University I work at. Some were specimen trees and others were wind or bug damage.

We had chainsawed blanks and sealed them with anchor seal since they were still green. I had to laugh when I saw dates from 07/2008 ; 06/2008 ; 09/2006 and 07/2010.

I have been cutting up Mesquite , Arizona Ash , Mimbres Walnut ( NM species ) , Box Elder , Chinese Pistachio , Pecan , Sycamore and some curly Palo Verde.
Also some larger branch wood from Oleander and Aspen.

Mostly pen blank stock but some larger blocks for boxes / pepper mills. I tried to get as many bowl blanks first but checking was an issue. This was especially true with the Mesquite and the common wind checking it tends to get.

I was very surprised at the curl in the Palo Verde when I started to cut into it. I hope to turn a quick pen from it over the weekend.
Also cut into a burl section of the walnut.

It did keep me busy during Spring Break and it helped clean up the shop. I am pretty sure that my replacement would just toss it so felt compelled to save as much as I could.

Since I will have much more than I can ever use up I expect to post some for trade or sale ( eventually .. since I am getting lazy in my old age ).

being a wood hoarder I can appreciate this.
I've not been in that part of the country much but when the oleander is in bloom it adds a lot of color to the desert.
is the Palo verde as green inside as out?

Any chance the Palo Verde was from the root? PV root has some amazing grain. Normally PV is just a very plain yellowish-white wood. (At least the local PV we have here in Phoenix is.)
