OK Thursday we are going in the shop. Finally holidays are past. All little projects are done and now for some fun time for about 3 to 4 months. I have a bunch of little projects that I want to try. I have been gathering some materials as well as some new tools. Have been doing some homework on a few jigs I need to make and still have a few that I need to work out that I need for my projects. But many times working on jigs are the best part. I will be making a new tablesaw cutoff sled. been wanting to upgrade the one I have now which is a little too basic. Been checking the internet and gathering ideas from a few different ones. I did learn something that I frankly never heard of and was never doing when making a cutoff sled and that was to square up the fence to use the 5 cut method and it gets the fence dead on square with blade. I always just used a draftsman square against the blade to set the fence. i thought it worked well but maybe not as well as I think. Now when I was buying some things from PSI on their end of year sale I happened to pick up a few blanks I could not pass up. I think a few pens will be in order to warm me up and get a feel for the tools again. I have a bunch of blanks finished but have no idea what kit they were for so may have to search them out too. Plus I have one kit I need to cast a blank for so that will be on the list also. These are my starting projects so look for them in near future. Other than that I am stoked to get back in the shop because it has been quite some time. Hopefully if all goes well I will be able to entertain you all with some cool stuff. Wish me luck. :)

Sounds like fun John! It's a little chilly here right now and my knee still gets a little tired standing too long. It's 7 weeks tomorrow after my surgery and I'm getting pretty mobile, so I know I will be back in my shop soon also. Lol

Making a blank to go with a particular kit is something I need to learn. I search and search my blanks for the perfect match and never quite find it. I'll definitely be watching to see what you come up with.
Sometimes I have to just make a blank that matches a themed pen which is the case here but was also able to find a couple blanks that also work with the same pen kit so I will show a variety when done.

Hi John,

That sounds great. We will be looking forward to seeing the results of your "fun time" in the shop. I'm afraid mine is going to slow down for the next couple of months until I get past jury duty calls for February and cataract removals in March.

Well I got my "ROOKIE" status back today. Thurs. went in the shop and more or less cleaned off a couple tools that I will be needind to do some of my projects. Fri. I drilled out 4 blanks for 2 pens I will be turning. yesterday was a run around day. Today I decided to turn those 4 blanks. Got my kits, my calipers, the bushings I needed and all the other stuff. getting down to finish passes on first blank, bam chip out. Now I can not remember ever chipping out a blank of any kind. So that was not a good start. But I did turn the other 3 down and will polish them tomorrow as I wait for epoxy to dry on this blank. All I wanted to do was get my feet wet before I start playing with tablesaw and other dangerous tools. Speaking of feet, man forgot what it was like to stand in one place for an long time. I have alot to relearn I guess. :)

I do know what you're talking about. I had 14 years off before recently getting back into the shop and turning. First thing I thought was dang that lathe spins pretty fast, I better be careful.
