I have done three pens made with aluminite and have been unable to get any kind of consistent gloss finish. So far I have sanded from 220-mm12000 with no luck. 2nd and 3rd pen sanded 220 - mm12000 and then applied CA, 2 thin 3 med applications, which is my usual method when fininhing wood. I get some glossy spots but also some not so glossy spots. Does anyone have a method for fininhing aluminite that gets a glossy finish.

I also use a CA finish on alumilite. I sand to 12000 as you do, then use 6 coats of medium. I get a completely glossy finish this way.

Could you be sanding through your coats of CA? It's the only thing I can think of that would cause your problem.

sounds like you are sanding through. If you had consistent coat of CA then you would have consistent shine.

Try the Alumilite Crystal Clear. It is a "new" formulation created with the help of one of our local members and shines up just as well as CA without having to apply CA.

I use crystal clear Alumilite, and sand to 600 grit. Tripoli and white diamond on a buffer. No CA. Takes about 1 minute. Works great.

Aluminite

I think some miss understood my post. I am not casting my own blanks but useing some made by another member so the crystle clear is not something I can use unless i am missing something. I assume that you use the crystle during casting and not as a finish.

Have you thought about contacting the person you bought from? They should be able to help more. Also, are the striaght resin or is something embeded in the resin? That makes a difference in how you finish it.
