Most rollerball kits come with a Schmidt 888 refill. A pilot G2 refill can often be subbed in directly, or in some cases with a small amount of simple modification. Why you'd choose a G2 over an 888 or 5888, I don't know ;)

Monteverde and a few other brands also make Parker style refills that use gel ink similar to a G2. As far as I know, any kit that uses a Parker style ballpoint refill can have one of these dropped in as a direct replacement.

Worth mentioning is the Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refills, which are I guess technically a ballpoint, but honestly I find them superior to gel. Also Parker style.

Nothing shabby about G2 Refills. Wide variety of tip sizes, colors, and available locally. As well they write pretty darn good.

I'm mostly joking. I do strongly prefer a 5888 to a G2, but I'm more than happy to let people write with whatever floats their boat :D

Gels are usually associated with any pen that accept a Parker-style ballpoint refill. Montverde and Parker make good gel refills. The are more wet than your typical RB and do run-out more quickly, but I like them.

I am not sure that the G2s and 5888s are gels. Not sure if the OP want using gel and rollerball refill interchangably. Perhaps, I have been mis-identifying them? BTW, I was only buying 5888 for the longest time; I have exclusilvely used G2 for years now.

G2 is gel. 5888 is rollerball. I only brought up 5888 because in the past I have taken rollerball kits that come with an 888 and managed to swap in a G2 refill, sometimes directly and sometimes after modification.

You are 100% correct; I just looked at the packaging. Thank you for clarifying!
