This is for the benefit of those with a grizzly G5979 lathe and a broken belt. Hopefully if they search the forum, this post will come up.

When you go to NAPA, the part number you want to buy is 3L240W.
The "W" version is the heavy-duty part. If you're in a bind and they don't have any, they can omit the "W" for a regular belt.

Our local NAPA will order parts, usually with overnight delivery service.
Always buy an extra belt. For whatever reason, even heavy duty belts can decide to fail with little use. My old Grizzly lathe used four belts in six years. But, one of those lasted only about three months. Go figger.

I think that a lot of it is how they're treated. The Reeves drives can be particularly hard on them, and just HOW hard depends on how smoothly the pulleys in the drive can slide over their respective shafts.

My belt lasted me almost exactly six years. For the first five and a half, I was always VERY easy on it when changing speeds, particularly slowing down. But the last four months, I've been more lazy, and have just been giving the lever really hard shoves to get it to change more quickly. One of those times, I pushed hard, and bam, that was it. I need to be more patient, or pony up and buy a proper VS lathe.
