I am going to bit on this one but...

I would do it with an oil, shellac, lacquer finish.

Start by sanding with an application of oil, ie BLO, Arrow, etc. I personally use Arrow because it has other fillers as well.
After 24 hours, or about 2 with polished Arrow oil, put on a few light coats of shellac. Wait 24 hours then remount and sand lightly to remove any imperfections you can feel, ie dust, slight runs if any.
After breaking shellac's surface coat, tghen spay a few light coats of lacquer.
Wait another 24 hours, then finish smoothing and polishing.

It take longer than CA, but will, in my opinion, give your walnut a much deeper and richer look.

Sorry to hijack here, by it seems to me that we do a great job of prepping our materials, ie wood, acrylic, antler, then want to have a 10 second finish.
A good finish should tke at least as long an amount of working time as the machining, assy time that went into the product.
That is how I was taught anyway for finishing furniture and other items.

Do not know why turners, and yes I do get caught up in it as well while turning, need to have a quick finish, when the best ones actually take time

Once again, my .02
