From a Willow Tree

This is from the base of the Sequoia's national park. Not from the actual park, making sure I get that straight.

I was visiting and a gentleman was cutting this Willow tree from inside a creek and so I stopped and asked him if he could cut me a small log to put in my luggage. Had to put the log in a plastic bag, due to it being completely wet. This was hard to turn, made this pen for a friend that is here visiting from Viselia, CA.

Did a friction finish!

Just wanted to drop a quick line and say how much I like your pens and, specifically, how you're experimenting with non-standard shapes. I think this kind of exploration is one of the things I enjoy most about our hobby.
You should definitely follow these designs for as long as you find it interesting.
I also like turning slimline kits and one decision I tried and liked was moving away from the kit-supplied centerband. I replace it with a nice little piece of wood. If I drill a 0.25" hole through the middle I can turn it with my top and bottom sections. This lets me show off a complimentary species of wood, but also means I can continue to explore interesting shapes without being stuck with the standard centerband size.
You probably already thought of this, so apologies if I'm stating anything obvious.

Thank you and I've only wondered how to make my own wooden center piece. I'll have to figure that out and see where my crazy ideas take me lol. Again thank you for the comment.
