Victor have you looked into real player? They have a free download and I jave a program that lets me convert FLAC to mp3.

IPods/IPad can play AAC and MP3 files. MP3s will not have as good sound quality (all things being equal, it really depends on where the files came from in the long run) but if the source is the same, I doubt 98% of the people could tell the difference (or have the equipment to make it matter). MP3 files however will not have issues with digital permissions which can sometimes come up with AAC files that have digital rights management (or mis-management, depending on your experience...)

FLAC is a lossless audiophile level compression that really does not compress the music too much, but I'm not aware of any normal applications that play them directly, they are usually used to reduce file size a bit from uncompressed WAV or AIFF files for downloading, and is widely used in the piracy sites and by people who trade live show recordings, as it is a format that does not degrade the audio at all. You would need to get a converter to convert the files to MP3/AAC/WAV/etc in order to listen to them.

LOL... Victor - most of us were sleeping since your first post!

Your best format overall universal format is mp3. Almost every device will play mp3 (even the apple devices where thats not their 'default'.) and is the most universal format. Others may argue that some of the other format are 'better sounding' due to loss, but most people cannot tell the difference as long as the data rate in the mp3 isn't too low.

I think you can download i Tunes for windows from the net. AAC files would be my personal first preference but Apple lossless format is better yet, although it depends on how much data space you want to dedicate to each file. I archive my CDs in AIFF for full fidelity but you take up a lot of storage space doing this. I usually "listen" on my mac with Apple lossless(you can on your Windows computer with i Tunes) or AAC, the default download codec for i Tunes. Keep in mind, if you want to archive at best quality you cannot download mp3 and convert later to a more lossless format and gain quality.
