I have been away for a few days. We celebrated my 50th and my SIL's 50th in Key west. We got back this afternoon. I have been planning this trip for a long long time.....

The first photo is just the marina. I love a guide that leaves at 8am instead of 5 am. Not only did he put us on fish, he kept us laughing for both days and steered us to the right eating places. After the ice/snomegeddon week the first part of the month, this was like heaven.

The second is my brother Paul and I with a couple of our fish. When we got back into the marina, the resturant cooked some of our catch along w/ all the trimmings. Absolutely the best fish I have ever eaten! We caught the limit of jacks, several different kinds of snapper, kobia, King Mackerall and several more that I do not remember.

I hope you got a chance to eat at Blue Haven and Two Friends Patio. What else did you do besides fish? Did you take in sunset celebration on Mallory Square? Fort Taylor is also a great sunset location after you have had your fill of the shows on Mallory. Hope you had a great place to stay. There are some real dives and some really wonderful places to stay on such a tiny island.

Mike, we did the sunset cruise, the light house....not many of those in north Texas...some more of the touristy stuff...consumed alot of seafood. Missed Mallory this time (we will go back!) Two Friends was on the list but ended up going to the Conch Republic Seafood company instead. We fished all day Friday and a half day Saturday. We "cruised" up and down Friday night and Sunday night. It was quite a show!

Can't beat the Keys! The view from Turtle Krawl's upper deck is fantastic. Great Fishing. Better people watching. Mel Fisher's Museum. The list goes on. I got 2 weeks coming up shortly. get away from this snow stuff. Gotta warm up.

Looks like we are going to try and make it back in June. Got to love summer rates.
For anyone that has been there in the last two years, have you tried the new Brazilian Steak House? We tried our first Brazilian Steak House in Aruba (Texas de Brazil) and loved it.

Mark - which sunset cruise did you take? The Western Union has been restored and is back making trips and would love to know how that trip is.

I am really making myself home sick thinking of KW. Just wish the Mrs. would go in Feb. Still too cool for her down there to really enjoy it. Diving is so much better when you do not have to put on any type of wet suit or skins.

We went on the Fury boat....$49, all the margaritas I could drink w/ munchies....chicken wings, meat and cheese trays, some veggy trays and the band from the Hogs Breath played.....It was great! Sunset was great, it was about 75 degrees and calm. We are already talking about going back next year but waiting until latter.

Hemingway days are a great time to go. Imagine walking down Duval and seeing 100+ guys that look like Hemingway. They close off Duval and they have food, crafts and all kinds of stuff. Would be a good place to sell pens too! The only problem is that the end of Hemingway days butts right up to lobster short season. The place is packed and it is hard to book the good places to stay. Same for Fantasy Fest. That makes Mardi Gras look dull.

March 5 is the first Conch Festival and then, on the 12th is the Marathon sea food festival. Stone Crab Heaven!
Howard Livingston has a show on cable and on the net Key West Time.com
great weekly show with a little bit of everything keys. There was a show around #6 or 7 that featured Hemingway Days.

I was stationed in KW from 10-21-65 to 10-21-66 On a landing craft (LCM-8) with an EOD team. One day, they showed us how to catch an intire school of Red Snapper:eek: The place sure has changed since then.

Mike, if you and Linda get back there this summer, be sure to let me know. We can hop on the SeaKeyWestExpress and meet with you for lunch.

Mark, thanks for posting this thread and, I'm glad to hear a good time was had in the southernmost point of the USA!

Chuck,
Right now it looks like come hell or high water that we will be going one of the first two full weeks in June. I just have to hit the reservations at the right time to get the good price, which means staying up till 3am. If the water temp was in the low 80s I would go now. We have another blast of winter coming Thursday and Friday.

How fitting to meet for lunch at Two friends Patio. I guess this means you have to get busy now and get the painting and curtains done.

Mark,
You know you can buy all those fishes in a can.... that way you don't have to spend all that time out on the water, in that fresh sea air and sunshine, and can spend it more productively in your shop in the saw dust and sanding dust and CA fumes doing productive work....:biggrin:

Those are some nice fishes there... being from Texas they are probably only the bait, right

When I was in the Navy, I was stationed on a radar picket ship... we had a particular station where we sailed in a grid back and forth over about a 200 mile circle... once on station, chief petty officers didn't have a lot to do, except fish... on station we would have so many lines overboard we looked more like a fishing trawler than a navy warship. One picket we caught so many fish they almost had to throw the chicken overboard to make room in the freezers for the fish....as a radio operator, I had to send a "fish report" every morning to Washington detailing what we caught the day before... we even hooked an Albatross one day... the bird grabbed one of the baits and got hooked through the beak...

Looked like fun, wish I could have been along for the beer and a little fishing on the side...:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Most important congrats on the 50! That is a real milestone these days. I have 6 years to go and I like to spend it on an RV cruse to Alaska. Just different strokes for different folks.
