The assorted governments are part of the problem with the poached material. As it has been a long standing practice for most countries that confiscate tusks or other material banned for sale other than by native peoples.
They hold it till the price rises or they need money then they hold an auction. Which adds to the problem about the documentation, since the amount sold can be in the multiple tons or ten's of tons.
The ivory and ebony wood I have used in the past was harvested form scrap piano's. Pre 1950's it is small in size but for pens and jewelery it works well.
With the advent of digital/electronic piano's the market for player and old piano's is just about Zero.
Most times they can't even be given away. Unless the people are looking for a happy link to their past.
Use mammoth ivory as there are estimated to be thousands of tons of it in Russia. Or the vegetable ivory from the palm nuts, which was used in the past as a cheaper substitute for ivory in the manufacture of buttons, thimbles and other small items. Since it is just about identical in make up and workability to real ivory.
