I am interested in feedback on Oneway chucks. Is the Talon comparable to the Supernova 2, or do you need to go to the Stronghold to be on par with the Suprnova 2? I have and Easy Wood chuck and I like it a lot, but I do not like the reverse operation on the Supernova 2 so I am thinking of making my next chuck a oneway--other one's on the radar are the Sorby chucks so any feedback on the Oneway or others is appreciated.

Cheers--Don

Don - I have talons and super nova 2s. The Talon is a smaller chuck and overlaps the supernova well until you get to bowls and such in the 14-16 inch size. At that point I would rather have a Stronghold or Vicmark hanging onto the block of wood.

There are a lot of good chucks on the market and oneway and Nova (as well as the Easy chuck you have) are good ones.

If you can -- always try any new gear if possible. Often at a local woodturning AAW Chapter meeting you can get an opportunity to touch and feel and turn.

I don't have a Bulldog.....yet...........however, the owner of the Bulldog chucks is a member of our AAW Chapter and has demoed his chucks. Based on his info and those that have them, it sounds like a superb chuck. I have the SuperNova 2 as well as a couple of Nova G3's and I am happy with them - even with the "lefty tighty"! There is always something better in the tool offerings, or so it seems.
Bulldog will be at the AAW Symposium in Pittsburg in the vendor area if you might be going there. Great time to "touchy/feelee".
All the sizes are compatible to the range of jaws.

Ihave a Nova G3, 2 Talons and 2 Strongholds. All will do a fine job. Overall, the Oneway chucks win out for me. I like the right/tight and the machining of the key to the gear seems to be a better fit in my opinion.
Dovetail jaws here. I have some serrated jaws but the dovetail pull in better.
Vicmark is a top dog too.

Really hard to recommend a chuck without knowing size of your lathe!
I am bias toward Oneway chucks have two Talons, but like Vicmarc, and Nova SN2 chucks as well. Sorby Patriot chucks have similar pricing but don't know anyone with one. See no real benefit of Bulldog family of chucks price wise, been told quality somewhere between Grizzly and Vicmarc.

If wanted an inexpensive chuck would look at these Hurricane chucks.Guess not paying extra for an insert.

Ken, thanks for that intel, I definitely will check out the AAW chapter for input as well.
What do you think of the Sorby Patriot chuck?

I have a few sets of Sorby Patriot Jaws (which interchage with Nova jaws) - and if the chuck is as well made as the jaws, it is a good one. The story I was told is that the patriot is a UK made chuck after Nova moved the mfg to China.

Good feedback folks, Wildman-my lathe is a Nova DVR XP, 16" swing 24" between centers. Ken, that's what I read about the Sorby chucks as well, I like stuff not made in China.

Don really puzzled by your question because that Easy Wood chuck a good match for your lathe. Unless move up to Nova Titan, Oneway Strong Hold, Vicmarc VM120 or VM150 do not see big difference in what you already have.

All the chuck we have talked about Nova SN2, Oneway Talon, Sorby Patriot, and Vicmarc VM100 similar or same as your Easy Wood.

Think both Buffalo & Hurricane chucks made in China.

I got by for years with my Talon & #2 jaw set, did upgrade my threaded insert when got a bigger lathe. Only secret to not needing bigger jaw set is use jam chucks for reverse turning. Bought second Talon chuck body and #1 jaws for small stuff because hate changing jaws.

Bill -- some of us are sure we are always one tool short of being a great turner --

being a tool junkie, I have a bucket of chucks -- and always looking for the perfect one (especially if it is of good value).
