First pipe restoration

These two pipes were the pipes of the father of a family friend that passed away not long ago. They were given to me (without stems) by her to see if I could do anything with them. I made the blank for the stem for one of them, cleaned the pipe up as much as I could, and shaped the stem. Not too bad of results. Still have a bit more sanding to do on the stem but its getting there.

Great restoration job, mate I can also see that the piper owner is a right hand smoker, huh...???

Just a question, did you have the old mouth piece to get measurements and shape from or, was all a guess/following average sizes/shapes...??? I say this because, as an ex-pipe smoker, when one finds a pipe that feels well and balanced, sending it for restoration, I would expect to get a "replica" of that feeling, that will depend solely to the new mouth piece design as the "head" is the same so, I wonder...!

I was just handed the stummels. No mouth piece for measurements. I just had to wing it. For the stem, I just cut the blank to the length of the pipe itself and dove in head first on the belt sander. Still more sanding to go. I have to get a flusher fit where they come together and get the button on the stem a little smaller. It's my pipe now so there's no worry about getting a replica.

That is a fine job you did on that stem. I'd never have guessed it to be anyone's first attempt, and I'd wager that it's as good looking or better than the original.

What material did you use for the stem? That's a really nice choice for the color.

No, I haven't gotten to that point yet. Gonna do some more shaping on the stem, get the button a bit smaller, then clean the bowl out. Waiting for a Castleford reaming kit to be delivered.
