Although the way you have done it could be a 'style', coming from another beginner, the two things I would say is 1)Yes, you need to get down to the bushings to look/feel right and 2) The lighter color pen seems to not have a square barrel at the middle ring. There appears to be a gap there as well.

Keep turning.. It gets more interesting!

Nothing wrong with being different.

However, that looks uncomfortable. Do you know that the "comfort" pen from PSI has a larger centerband, which would accomodate your extra girth?

Turning looks good, finish looks fine. NICE START!!
 
My first two pens looked like they were made by beavers.
I can tell yours are pens, and not bad looking plus they probably work fine.
My first ones gave me splinters something awful.
 
I gave the light colored Cocobolo to my wife and wanted to disassemble to fix but she wants it the way it is. I get nervous using the skew chisel when I get so close to the bushings. It's a great feeling though to see the finished product.
