I finally decided to try my hand at a lamp yesterday. It came out okay, I guess, but it definitely needs a different shade. The finish is blo, and I am trying to decide if I need to add to the finish when the BLO cures, or not. I have a vase with the same dilemna. If anyone has any theories on finishing on top of BLO, I'd be happy to hear it!

BTW, the lamp is maple (a gift from doghouse a while ago) with an african mahogony top.

I hope my first lamp turns out half as nice. Speaking of shades ..... have you seen the wooden lamp shades that are turned on a lathe? Aspen is supposed to be a great materials for shades and lamps.
 
There is an art to making your own shades, not woodworking, but glue and fabric. It may pay to look into it.
 
Nope, I'm not talking about making lampshades from fabric. I mean the one's that are turned on a lathe using Aspen. I've seen this guy on HGTV and have been awed by his work. Check this out:

Yeah, I know you can make them from wood, I mean there's a whole other artform of making them from fabric. I've seen it done, it's pretty impressive.
