I was wondering what finish to use on these? I am turning them on a pendent plate. I had bought a bunch of the pendent blanks and want to use them. CA is a little difficult. It would probably stick. Friction polish is not even a option in my book.
I turned one last night and sprayed with polyurathane. But I really dont have a really warm place to spray them. I need to make about 30 to get a nice display set-up.
Thanks
Rich

I have used spray lacquer with good success. Also tried dip lacquer this xmas on ornaments and was pleased with results which leads me to wanting to try it on pendants and bracelets for my spring shows

Rich what option do you leave??? Don't know what to tell you if you don't have a warm place to do finishing. Every finish that I know of needs warmth. Good luck with that.

Warm is relative -- temps??

Acrylic varnishes (Enduro by general finishes is a good one) will apply and make a good finish. I use thinned lacquer sanding sealer and follow with a CA finish as needed for durablily.

Great finishing often takes longer than the turning --

What is the material you are using? On all of the ones that I have made, I have chosen to only use good sanding and then buffing. It is difficult to get a good CA finish on something like this since the surface speed reduces the closer to center you get and you CA will not be as uniform as you get on a pen with a consistent surface speed over the whole project. You could stop the lath and apply the CA with the lathe off and then sand and polish.

How did you like the clips and chains, btw?

Thanks guys for the info.
Curtis the money clips and key chains are really nice. Well made and heavy. Wish you had some in gold. I think I will try the buffing . I am using wood but am going to look for acrylics in that size. I think Exotics have them.
I started turning some then moved over to some other things.
I will have to get back to them this week.

My shop is heated but with a ventless heater. I could probably get it nice and toasty then shut off the heater and then use spray poly. I have had good luck with Min-wax spray poly on some other projects.

Thanks

When I apply a finish on the money clips and necklace pendants I do it with the lathe off. I also sand with the lathe off.

Very simple to do a CA finish. Just take the madrel out of the lathe and apply as many layers of CA you want over a piriod of time letting each one dry. When you have enough layers put mandrel back in lathe and just polish as you would with MM. I do this all the time with bookmarkers. Same thing only larger. If you have more than one mandrel and you can make those, better yet. Some people maybe using a faceblock instead of a mandrel so that is the same process. The only thing I suggest when using a face block make a witness mark on the block to correspond to the chuck you are using so you can return it back to the same position.

Just another thought for those making cast pen blanks, It maybe a worthwhile project to make blanks for these money clips and also keychains that Curtis is selling. By the way they are very well made and will add to your line of pens. Sell a pen and a clip or keychain with the same material and you are golden.

You can cast the material in squares as you have been doing or get a bunch of pill bottles and make them round something similar to a bottlestopper blank. I expect my cut when I see them on the advertising page.
