I don't know what happened. It was 4 coats of Thin CA. 4 coats of medium then this. Any ideas? The upper barrel is fine. The wood is cedar

Not sure what we are looking at but to me it looks like the wood was not sanded properly before the CA was applied. If it was sanded to at least 600 grit then the voids would be smaller. Before applying CA or any finish the sanding dust must be removed. I like to use compressed air. Works for flat work so why not pens. When sanding between coats or whenever you decide to sand, again the dust must be removed before moving on. You are using the thin CA as a sealer coat so it is important to sand each coat smooth and again removing the dust. That is all I can say because you do not describe the method you used to apply. Good luck. No big deal. Sand back to starting point and try again.

Moisture possibly under the CA. It doesn't take much to turn splotchy and white.

To much accelerator can also be a culprit... why use the stuff anyway? You turn for 5-10-15 minutes, so whats another 30-45 seconds. Give the CA 30 seconds and most of the time you are good to go (unless your shop is cold.)

Looking closely at the bushing and end of the barrel, I see similar white threads stuck there, so I believe you may be having shredding of your applicator. Mine of preference is Taco Bell's brown napkins. (They blend in better) I have tried the HD foam mentioned here. It does not shred but I can't get as smooth a finish with it. I would just sand back down a couple of layers and reapply the CA. My $0.02.

Yes that is my applicator. I had applied 8 prior coats then the applicator stuck to the barrel. I do not use accelerator. I wait at least 2 minutes between coats of thin and 5 between medium.

The only thing I can think of is that my yellow socks were in the wash.

That will do it every time, especially when the moon is in the waxing crescent and is less than 25% full.

Sand it down and put on a few more coats of CA and you will be fine.

I make a lot of cedar pens and this happens to me as well. I have found that wiping the pen with DNA before I start applying CA helps. It acts like the other oily woods sometimes.

Well GColeman, you maybe right, about the yellow socks but, I reckon, they have nothing to do with what happened to you (that barrel), in fact, was only another day that I was talking about the relationship between CA thickness, drying/curing time and sanding.

As the CA gets thicker form multiple coats, the drying time changes, and without accelerator to harden the CA surface, paper towels or anything that can be used as an applicator, is only inevitable...!

Even using accelerator, after the CA thickness starts to be "substantial", initiating another CA coating too soon after the accelerator was applied, can/will result in an identical mess. The good thing about it is that if this happens in the last coat, using the wet/dry sanding stages that follow, it will not make any difference to the finish, it will come out as if nothing has ever happened...!

That would be many of us in here that could confirm this, huh...??? so don't feel alone on this one, lucky that is a simple thing to resolve/fix...!

Good luck.

Cheers
George

Accelerator is the ONLY thing standing between me and some of the worst CA finishes you've seen in your life.
