Hi,

Have just had a pen returned for a refill and noticed that the finish gad discoloured in places. Showing an almost flourescent yellow colour to the wood under the CA finish.

My normal finish is blo to pop the grain, then CA and accelerator.

So I've just done a few testers, blo first the CA and accel, just CA and accel and can't get any discolouration to happen. But found an old segmented blank that has just CA and accel as the joiner and that shows a bright yellow discolouration?

Has anyone else noticed this? Or give any advice as to why it's happened/ how to prevent?

Phil

Sorry Phil I have never heard of this discolouration before so unable to offer any advice, I do not use accelerator in my finishing routine.

Can you upload pictures of the problem, this may help!

Strange things happen!

Time does many strange and unwelcome things to our turnings. Ive had turnings crack after thirty years, Ive had them crack after three months, And if I want color to pop the grain , I add it before tha CA and Blo in that order. I currently have four pen returns to disassemble and "return" My highschool shop teacher taught us that wood is always moving, and that no matter how dry or how well sealed things can happen. I have a redwood burl plate crack halfway through after thirty years.:eek:
