I have only been turning pens for a couple yrs now and never turned anything before. I am fortunate to have found IAP (thank you guys and gals)to help me with all my "stupid" questions. I am also greatfull to the group of guys in the Hampton Roads area and learning from the EL Presidente (Ptownsubbie).

My Dad. A retired shop teacher (32 years) who came for a visit and dug out my unused mini lathe one day while I was at work. When I came home he gave me a pen he had turned that day and told me to go change my clothes and come out to the garage to "learn something".

My life hasn't been the same since.

Thanks, Dad.

I started a thread like this several months ago, but it is nice to see it brought up again. I have to tip my hat to Jim (Corain King) eventhough he is a Cowboys fan, and Fred (PTownSubbie), they are the ones that I learned most everything I know from.

Wow that is ironic, my 1000th post was thanking Jim and Fred!

Attend that Mid Atlantic Penturners Gathering this spring. Those events are full of information and help from others. Nothing like person to person exchanges to make information gathering easy.

The info from this site.
Thank you all, every time I run out of ideas I look thru past postings and the "what if"
gears start to turn.

I can't say as I have one person, but more of a collection of IAP members and many from our local pen turners group (Hans and Jonathon just to call out 2 locally)

Any one that answers a question is a big help! Pen turners on some other forums are viewed at the same level as a sheep herder:eek::redface:. You guys that make products, molds, clips, components, blanks and the retail guys/gals here are great people...really a one-stop, make-pens-till-you-drop place. Glad the place is here!

I started last Feb. and I have learned a lot from asking questions here, people willing to share information and then going out and trying. I have made a BUNCH of mistakes but I have learned a lot. I feel like you folks are extended family.

Way too many to list since I have been turning for 37 years and have picked up alot of tricks along the way, but the local wood turners club and you-tube are high up on the list.
