In my experience Terry, Colorwood or some of the other names it goes by is a bit soft. I have a couple dozen cutoffs from gun stocks. I stabilize them before use, problem solved!! I seem to be stabilizing a lot of stuff lately. Grain direction can also cause tear out. Try a sheer cut with a bowl gouge, that may help...JMHO

using a good sharp skew then a good sanding and you'll be set. apply thin CA to seal then sand to smooth, then apply CA finish. I've had little problem with them using this method

To add to what Brett said; After you glue the tube in, trim the ends with a sanding jig. Then put a drop of thin CA (Super-glue) on a piece of plastic Pid the end of the blank into the CA on both ends and repeat for the other blank. Check and remove any glue you get on the inside of the brass tube.

Most Definately a dull skew...will sand and fill in with ca ...I like the blank and hardware...another project go be done again.... thanks everyone

Try Dymondwood, it has some infused resin. Also, resharpen your tools.

When stabilizing, do you get any colors bleeding over? What do you use to stabilize?
Agreed, I have used that same blank with no problems sanding only to 600 grit.

This is a night fire blank from psi...I just drilled cut and glued ( 2 part epoxy ) the blank...after trimming I deburred....rough gouged from square to round then skew to size...sanded from 120 to 12000 then shellawax....
