This is probably the only time I have been envious of you folks in the humid climates. You guys get all of those killer large burls. Around here the large trees are in someone's yard and they Never offer them up on the side of the road. I have stopped and asked about trees after they take them down and have always been told that the wood is going into the fire place. Serious bummer.

Is there a place where a person might be able to buy the large burls (I am sure that is WAY out of my price range but it is worth a look. Out side of town the biggest "trees" are sage brush.

By the way. It was 25% humidity today and 98 degrees. I thought I was going to melt. You folks can keep the humidity.

I will let you in on my secret. I call the local Firewood Dealers. You cant split burl and most of them throw them in the burn pile. I have a guy I call quarterly and go take them off his hands. You will be limited to what you get. 'round here it is mostly Oak and some Pecan Burl but if I'm lucky I can catch him w/ whole Mesquite or Hickory logs.

This is a long shot, but you may want to locate a small operation that clears land and sells the lumber (similar to firewood guys). A friend in VA would remove the burls and toss them before taking the logs to the mill. He said that he was paid less for "tainted" wood.

Mark,

As a Teacher thatyou are from a mug like me a recommendation, exhaust the trees you do have in your state (cheapest option). There are a number of members in your state with exciting timber ie Desert Ironwood in Burl Form.

Then look carefully at the offerings for sale on this forum and you will certainly see burls for sale, cut, dried, already to go at great rates. There is a fellow teacher in a northern State who sells exceptional burls at good prices.

Now in the proffesional sellers countless offerings exist.

As a burl user with great access my humble experience is go to the makers you admire and ask them, pay your way using their recommended providers it will save you money, find those you can trust and have success (the grass on the other side of the fence is available easily).

Please try not to be like the dog chasing the bus cause when you find burl you will be unimpressed at the percentage of good in with the unuseable. Variety is good, experience allows educated choice.

Have success, my normal thought would be to ship quantities of burl to you but I am running out of the means to acheive this. I always remember Aristotle talking to the disciple when he put his head under the water when you really want to find timber that strongly you will find a way.

Have fun along the way to success I do.

Kind regards Peter.

Thanks. Yeah I need to look closer. Just looking at the wood porn flashed around on this site and furniture sites.
