Well not really new, but new to me. Got a nice deal on 10w laser with extras off facebook about a month ago. Started engraving slate coasters a couple weeks ago. They are kind of addicting. I've actually sold a couple sets to lady at my wifes work. This is the majority of what I have done soo far.

Do lasers remove material? I'm curious if you could remove about between 8 and 20 thousandths of material from the surface of a wooden piece. There wouldn't be an image, mor so just a very shallow "pocket".

Most lasers can remove material which is considered engraving. When engraving, the laser is burning the wood. When too much power and combinations of laser speed are applied, more of the wood is burned. This is usually not what you want when engraving but material is burnt away. Lasers can also cut wood with the right powers and speed.
