I spent over an hour last night just looking through the wood turning blanks on e-bay. I was looking at blanks for bowls, spindles as well as pens. The whole time I was wishing I knew if the seller was an IAP or other wood working forum member. I tend to trust the IAP vendor because I have never had a bad experience buying from them. I was wondering if it was possible and permissible for people that frequent here to list their e-bay seller name so we would know who they are. There may be reasons why that is not permitted. If not I understand, just a thought.

Use the ask a question feature and see if they will identify themselves. I used to deal with a couple of sellers and they were members here, but are not around anymore.

Ebay is so slanted towards protecting the buyer that I don't worry about Ebay purchases provided the seller has good feedback. There's a lot of small time sellers on Ebay that have great wood at more than fair prices and for the most part these folks no nothing about IAP.

Yes, I probably shouldn't have stated it was a trust thing. I have bought a lot of things off E-bay and had only one bad deal. Better average than dealings with local stores, for sure. But, I would like to support IAP members. Maybe not as many sell on E-bay as I thought.

Bad sellers do not last long on Ebay. They get dumped for just a few negative feedbacks. If the seller has 50 plus feedbacks you should be safe. If they have a thousand they will not be any problem as they do not want to loose their income source by getting kicked off Ebay.

As a buyer you do have some advantages. You get to chose what to watch and when to bid. Almost everything on Ebay will be repeated for sale in a few days. Do not get carried away and overpay. I have seen one of a kind items come up almost every week.

Think outside the box also. To buy well on Ebay should be to learn how to spell both correctly and incorrectly. Sellers who misspell items get few if any bidders. I have bought items which if listed correctly and spelled correctly would have sold for five or ten times what I bid on them. Think spalted, spaulted, spalt, spallated ect. Only one is right but all get used often. The best "spallated" bowl blank will get almost no buyer because the search system they use does not allow alternate spelling and only those who enter a mis spelled search will see the item. I use to buy Ithica items when they came they were Ithaca. Item might have cost .99 plus shipping but if spelled correctly it would have sold for $30-50.00.

Mine is rizay. It's true what everyone has been saying about buying on ebay. I wouldn't buy from out of the country. I think ebay only gives 90 days to file a complaint. If you buy from another country, most of that time is gone when you shipment arrives.

I thought about listing something on Ebay the other day. I haven't had anything on there in years. Then I saw a seller can't leave negative feedback, and now they are charge a % on shipping costs. Yikes.. Then I went to a site that has a (total) fees calculator.. When all is said and done Ebay would take 14.48% out.. Yeah.. Think I'd rather use PPC advertising and keep a customer at my own site or sell on amazon where I at least know they have high traffic.

I never realized it was that much. Makes a person wonder how a seller makes a profit, isn't there also a charge of using Paypal?

That % included the paypal fee.

Fee's also depend on how you list .. ie.. Store, auction, fixed price and so forth.

Actually it is the seller that can't leave a negative.
I have the same handle on Ebay- amboyna. I sell rare books, not pens.
I have a $1.00 handling charge. That covers delivery confirmation and packing supplies. If you do not do delivery confirmation the buyer can say they never got the item and file a Paypal claim for a refund.

Another post mentioned Ebay does not care about the seller. Soooo true.

If you print your postage on-line you actually get a discount for using delivery confirmation....if you aren't doing it now it might be worth looking into. I pay 20 or 25 cents less for a small flat rate box with confirmed delivery than without.
