I had some questions about dying the wood....

When do you dye?... after sanding to what grit?... I just did a Maple-from-hell that would only take the dye after sanding to 120 grit... any finer and the wood acted like it was sealed and the dye just sat on the surface...

Do you sand after dying the wood at all?

Have you had any need/success with sealing the wood prior to dying?... as in applying a single coat of CA or other sealer, sanding, then dying?

Thanks... just did 2 pens and was totally shooting from the hip during the whole process :D

As soon as I get done with the rough sanding then I dye with aniline dye before ca, ca will seal the wood from any dye soaking in, I would dye then sand to a fine grit then hit it again before ca, they really do make an awesome looking pen when done.Howard

I sand to 400 grit and then follow with #0000 steel wool. I then add some of that NGR dye from CSUSA and let that soak in for about 2 minutes. I add EEE,Shellawax, and last of all Rennasance wax. It looks really good on quilted maple. The dye was green on one pen blank and on the other was yellow. It turned out really good.:D:D

Hi, I sand the wood to about 400,then apply the anniline dye,i never sand after the dye is on.i use the highest mm 12000 to smooth out any raising of grain or brown paper bag.
I then apply the ca/blo and then do what you do so well.Carl

Hi , I sand to about 1000 grit then use food coloring to dye the wood and no sanding after coloring then give it a coat of thin CA , THEN sand with about 1000 grit to smooth it out . Be careful not to sand through the CA .... works real nice with any wood .
If you use a seal coat of anything the dye will not penetrate into the wood and the dye job will come out splotchy if it takes at all
