I have a two car garage which I park two trucks in and I was wanting to know what is the best dust collector for a small shop. My concerns are size, cost, sound.

I don't know of a "quiet" DC system but I built my own sound dampening housing and it cut down the sound by way more than 50%. In making the housing, I covered the inside and outside with carpet squares glued on with contact cement. I also wrapped carpet felt around the pipe - held on with electrical tape. Because I live in Japan and houses are CLOSE, I had no choice but to make an enclosed housing, and it worked.

As to the best for a small shop, I can't help with that. I am using a Japanese Makita portable DC unit that is not available outside of Japan.

I bought an HF 2hp DC and 1 micron canister conversion kit. Well, actually I bought two because we have two shops. One of them is in my 2 car garage. I wouldn't call it small, but it is on wheels so you can push it into a corner. I also wouldn't call it quiet, but it's not horribly louder than my old shop vac and it does a much better job. It was inexpensive, however. I paid $169.99 for the DC and another $169.99 for the conversion kit.
